As a teenager growing up in New Orleans, I developed some serious health problems, including often losing the use of my knees. Through my friend and neighbor, Jimbo Edwards, I began to understand that my illnesses were rooted in poor nutrition and poor digestion. Jimbo listened well and opened my mind to seeking a road to personal healing. To understand my own health better, I came to Western North Carolina to study alternative medicine at the NC School of Natural Healing in Asheville, while living in Brasstown with a friend. During my two years of study, I desire grew to positively impact others’ health without being an authority figure.

During my studies, I was struck by the realization that our skin is the largest organ of our body, yet we often chose to use skin products like petroleum jelly, which is essentially gasoline! What we put on our skin goes directly into our bloodstream, to our liver, and to other organs. Then we rinse these chemicals off our skin and it all goes into our water source. My studies and my own path towards health helped me I decide to create Blue Moon Herbs, hand-made herbal personal care products made with 100% synthetic free, earth-friendly ingredients. These products are formulated according to holistic, health-oriented principles without the use of animal testing or preservatives. I strive to focus on why I’m making natural personal-care products, why they are important to our health and our planet, rather than focusing on vanity. Living energy is present in these natural products and is readily available for the living body.

The first time I took MMF’s Foundations class early in 2002, I didn’t know what I was doing! After attending a trade show in Arizona in August 2002, I understood better what I needed to make this work and decided to take Foundations again. This time, I created a stronger business plan, focusing on marketing and a sound financial plan. I am excited about MMF’s Mountain Business Alliance, because I now have the time and the desire to network with other business owners. Fortunately, a friend of mine has recently become an investor in Blue Moon Herbs, allowing me to devote full-time to the business. After seeing me struggle for years working lots of part-time jobs, and after ordering my personal-care products as favors for his wedding, he offered to invest in Blue Moon Herbs’ success. ‘I believe in you and want you to go big,’ he affirmed.
